Norma Jane Sabiston UNO Scholarships
Norma Jane received her Bachelor of Arts from the University of New Orleans, with her major area of study being Political Science, in 1979. She returned to UNO as a successful public affairs consultant and volunteered her time as president of the UNO International Alumni Association. Under NJ’s leadership, the Alumni Association nearly doubled its membership in 18 months.
In recognition of her service and her dedication to uplifting young people, UNO, the UNO Foundation and the UNO International Alumni Association have named, in perpetuity, the annual young alumnus/ae of the year award the “Norma James Sabiston Distinguished Young Alumnus/a of the Year Award.” Funds raised through the NJS Legacy Fund will be used to create an endowment to establish the Norma Jane Sabiston Memorial Scholarship, which be presented to a deserving student each year in perpetuity.
Norma Jane Sabiston LYS Scholarships
Norma Jane attended the Louisiana Youth Seminar as a student participant in 1972. Out of the approximately 150 participants, NJ was elected as the “Most Outstanding Delegate”. She returned the next four summers as a counselor and went on to serve as a staff assistant for three years, then as program director for four years. Since 1984, NJ served continuously on the Board of Directors or the Advisory Board focusing on Fund Development and the Recruitment of students from the New Orleans area. She is a member of the 5 Year club and the LYS Hall of Fame. The LYS Board of Directors voted to dedicate the 2021 LYS in honor of our beloved Norma Jane Sabiston.
The funds donated to LYS in honor of Norma Jane will go toward the Norma Jane Sabiston LYS Scholarship Fund and will be used to annually sponsor student to LYS. The students will be selected by the Sabiston family based on their leadership potential and their embodiment of the NJ spirit.
